The Stag Inn, Balls Cross
“The Stag Inn is set in the beautiful hamlet of Balls Cross in Petworth and plays an important role in the local community from hosting a polling station on election days to holding live music events in the garden on warm summer evenings. Our pub is renowned and loved for its little-altered pub interior.
The historic core is the two rooms at the centre of the pub, which was extended in the late 19th or early 20th century when the former post office cottage was added. A fourth room, formerly the beer store, became the games room in the mid-1990s. Our public bar has large Horsham flagstones – some 3ft x 4ft but all irregular shapes. Folklore has it that these were laid first, and the building constructed around them! The old inglenook fireplace is essentially unaltered over the centuries and during the winter it provides a focal point for a comforting relaxing warm welcome.
The Stag Inn is included and listed in the Campaign for Real Ale’s National Inventory of Historic Pub Interiors, as an important surviving example of a simple pub interior that is largely unaltered since the 19th century.”
